I’m reading Leviticus, and some days it is tough slogging. I recognize that God’s Word is wisdom and even in details of ritual sacrifice that have been long replaced by Grace in the final sacrifice of Jesus, there are many relevant applications. Today I read this verse and it made me pause and ponder —
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: “I am the LORD your God. 3According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances. 4You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them: I am the LORD your God. 5You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.
This passage introduces Chapter 18 which proceeds to specifically identify forbidden sexual immorality, but could be synopsized as the Lord saying —
Be captured by My culture, not the prevailing culture.
I should remind myself of this admonition daily. Our culture has long abandoned a biblical worldview and elevates the self. Fame, accumulation and personal pleasure are advertised as solutions to self fulfillment, but their pursuit always falls short of their advertised satisfaction. I have often tried to seek one of these plus God, only to find find myself attempting to walk two diverging paths. As my stride is stretched, I eventually have to choose one over the other.
Jesus reminded us that His is a narrow path, a singular path, a challenging path, and a path requiring a sharp focus, and I often feel like I’m stumbling instead of striding along it. My bible is the staff that steadies me…….
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105 NKJV)
The simple practice of spending minutes a day reading the Word re-enters the correct destination address in my spiritual GPS. Quiet prayer strengthens me for the walk. Every day in His Word reveals or confirms Truth in my life (even when I am slogging through Leviticus). Chapter 18 says :
I am the LORD your God. 5You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.
I can’t know what I haven’t even read, so again today I’m reading…. slowly slogging through Leviticus….. (He is the Lord)
