Today’s Reading — Ecclesiastes 7:14 – In the day of prosperity be happy, But in the day of adversity consider– God has made the one as well as the other So that man will not discover anything that will be after him.
God allowed Satan to sift Job beyond anything we can imagine. He had lost wealth, family, and yet he remained steadfast to God. It is one thing to proclaim our allegiance to Jesus and quite another thing to remain as trusting souls when all Hell is raining down in our lives. There is nothing in the universe that can shatter the sovereignty of God. Untested faith is easy faith. The temper of faith is revealed in life’s dark and difficult moments. All that occurs is done in the sight of a sovereign God.
The providence of Heaven brings the sun and the rain. God is not just a the Lord of sunshine….God has made the one as well as the other ….. God has the capacity to take even raw evil, even our sin and twist our circumstance in such a way that we will grow and He will be glorified. It can be almost impossible to see that from the bottom of the pit of broken relationship, or a broken bank account, of a lost job, or the depth of addiction, but while our eyes may stain for God, He is seeing our circumstance and hearing our prayers clearly. David, who knew both the heights and depths of life, wrote — You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever. (Psalm 30: 11,12)
I trust Jesus. Even when I cannot seem to stop some difficulty in which I find myself, I trust Him. Even when it looks like there is no way out but more trouble, I trust Jesus. He has built this trust with me from the seed of faith He planted in my heart at my salvation. He has let me experience some things I would rather He had omitted. When I need Him most, He is always there. The prodigal son had to end up knee deep in pig slop before his eye returned to trusting the sovereignty of God — But when he came to his senses, he said, `How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! (Luke 15:17) As he looked back to his father, the Father was looking down the road for him. Grace was looking down the road at him. Forgiveness was looking down the road at him. The Father’s eyes were on him all the while. The Father is not looking for opportunities to blame, but to bless.
Are you worrying as if the Lord was running low on blessings? Has lost His Sovereign reach? His sight was fading and you are no longer in His view? Does the scary news you hear each night about our economy darken your heart with fear? God’s solutions for very complex problems are reduced to very simple terms. — Trust Jesus for the outcome. When congress seems to fail, trust Jesus. When the financial wizards seem inept, trust Jesus. When your trust was in the financial plan you once relied on, that has now failed, trust Jesus. We live in a world today where the goats have all scattered, running for the next best form of self protection, and the sheep are simply lining up behind the Shepherd. Trust Jesus. Keep you eyes on the One who saved you. Come to your senses.
